AFL takes Seven to Friday night ratings win despite NRL’s Sydney strength for Nine

AFL logoFriday night’s TV ratings fortunes rose and fell with sporting code allegiances on Friday night.

Thanks to AFL, Seven dominated in Melbourne and Adelaide, while NRL took Nine to wins in Sydney and Brisbane.

In Melbourne, Seven’s Friday Night Football coverage of North Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs pulled in 431,000 viewers, making it the city’s most watched program of the night. t also rated 105,000 in Adelaide, the city’s second biggest show after Seven News.

Meanwhile, in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, Seven aired the AFL game on secondary channel 7Mate, where it pulled in a further 143,000 viewers – giving the game an overall metro viewership of 679,000.

Meanwhile, Nine’s NRL game featuring Parramatta Eels vs Canterbury Bulldogs rated 299,000 in Sydney – making it the city’s most watched show – and 153,000 in Brisbane.

In Sydney and Brisbane, Nine saw off Seven with an evening audience share of 26.1% to 16.2%, and 22.5% to 17.5% respectively.

In Melbourne, Seven beat Nine by 30.1% to 14.2%, while the margin was 25% to 12.3% in Adelaide.

In Perth, where there was no sport on the main channels, Seven won the night with a 16.9% share ahead of Ten on 11.2%, Nine on 11.1% and Nine on 9.1%.

Nationally, the single most watched program was Seven News with a metro audience of 1.041m, according to the preliminary overnight ratings from OzTam.

In the breakfast slot, Nine’s Today beat Seven’s Sunrise by 330,000 to 296,000.

Across the five city metro, Seven won the night with a 22.5% share, ahead of Nine’s 17.9%, Ten’s 11.5% and ABC’s 10.9%.
