Twitter traffic dives as users rapidly migrate to Threads
Meta’s new social media platform Threads has amassed more than 100 million users in under a week, and its popularity is taking its toll on Twitter’s numbers.
During the first two days that Threads was active, Twitter traffic dropped 5%, compared to the same two days in the previous week, and was down 11% year-on-year, according to data from online tracker SimilarWeb.
A more damning report came from Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, who simply tweeted “Twitter traffic tanking”, alongside the below graph showing volume requests for Twitter falling steadily.
Twitter is feeling the heat. New chief Linda Yaccarino claimed on Twitter that last week the platform had its most single-day users since February.
“Don’t want to leave you hanging by a thread,” she wrote, “but Twitter, you really outdid yourselves! Last week we had our largest usage day since February. There’s only ONE Twitter. You know it. I know it.”
Yaccarino didn’t clarify which day of the week it was, nor how many users the platform attracted.
It is inevitable that people are going to Threads to have a look. 100 million out of 2.5 billion Facebook users is not a huge percentage and many will return when they satisfy their curiosity and then find Facebook is censoring them.
The fact that you apparently cannot get out of Threads without losing your Instagram account sounds like something that might raise eyebrows at the ACCC in Australia.
