Uber offers free rides to anyone named Sam

Ride-sharing service Uber is offering anyone with the first name Sam a free $20 Uber ride each day for a week between 21 and 27 August.

Uber chose the name Sam as it is one of the most common unisex names among its 3,000,000 current riders.

Uber explained on its blog: “So whether you’re a Sam, Samantha, Samten, Sameera, Samil, Samsun, Samar or any other variation of Sam, register with Uber before midnight on Friday 18 August and you can enjoy free rides up to the value of $20, every day, from 21-27 August 2017.”

As part of the promotion Sam Mac and Sam Frost appeared on Sunrise in a James Corden Carpool Karaoke-style skit.

Over the weekend, both The Sunday Telegraph and The Herald Sun reformatted its front page to promote “Samday”.

Zac Skulander, head of print innovation at News Corp Australia, said in a statement: “We needed an innovative way to answer a strong brief and a really great initiative. It is a very compelling offer for our readers and subscribers, and a unique opportunity to demonstrate the flexibility of our print brands.”

Andrew Da Silva of MediaCom, said: “We’re so excited about this campaign because it truly connects a compelling offer from UBER with the readers of the leading newspapers in the country, brilliant creative work from The Special Group, integrated PR from One Green Bean and News Corp and, of course, supported by paid media. This is an awesome example of connected paid, owned and earned media.”
