Unions launch campaign calling for tax on super profits to fix housing crisis, via Campaign Edge

The Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has teamed up with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) to launch a new campaign via creative agency Campaign Edge, calling for a tax on super profits to fund affordable housing.

The campaign argues that such a levy could fund the construction of 53,00 social and affordable dwellings each year, assisting with efforts to ease the housing crisis.s

According to the campaign’s website, Australia needs almost 947,000 new properties over the coming two decades to fix the crisis, with rents and mortgages spiralling out of control in the interim.

The website reads: “A super profits tax would raise $511 billion to allow us to close the gap by building 53,000 homes a year over the next two decades. We’re calling on the Australian Government to meet the nation’s biggest problem head on with a fair levy on super profits. Taxing the extraordinary profits of just 0.3 per cent of businesses in Australia would meet our housing needs, creating enormous economic and social benefits across the nation.”

Dee Madigan, executive creative director at Campaign Edge, said: “Everyone knows that Australia is in a housing crisis. So we were thrilled to help the CFMEU with a campaign that highlights not just the growing disparity between corporate largesse and the very real struggle of working people, but also presents a real, costed solution.

“A super profits tax would affect well under 1% of businesses and only kick when corporations earn profits in excess of the normal profits. And, most importantly, would provide the funding to build the 53,000 affordable and social houses required every year to end the housing crises,” she concluded.
