Us beats Dumbo to top weekend box office with $3.84m in takings

The Jordan Peele directed thriller Us premiered to take $3,843,672 across 319 Australian screens over the weekend.

The much-anticipated follow up to Peele’s Get Out stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o alongside Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Elisabeth Moss, and Tim Heidecker.

Distributed by Universal, the film beat out Tim Burton’s live action Dumbo remake which also premiered this weekend, but took $2,754,514 across 501 screens.

Starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Alan Arkin, the remake of the 1941 Disney animation has been skewered by critics for a clunky plot.

Both films knocked Captain Marvel from the top spot which is has held for three weeks. It took $2,281,016 across the weekend, adding to a total box office taking of $34,851,678 to date.

Indie romance Five Feet Apart took fourth place, pulling $1,600,553 despite premiering across just 256 screens.

The film stars Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse as two young patients with cystic fibrosis and was directed by Justin Baldoni who worked on the documentary My Last Days which followers patients with the disease.

The Lego Movie 2 landed in fifth place, dropping from second position last week. It took $1,315,403 across the weekend, adding to a total box office earn of $5,376,646.
