‘We are the fastest growing TV Network in the history of TV’ claims Vice CEO Shane Smith

CEO of youth focused media company Vice says it is disrupting both the TV space rapidly faster than any other company in television in an eccentric and sweary performance at the company’s Newfronts presentation.
Shane Smith made the bold claim at Vice’s Newfronts event telling a room packed full of media buyers: “TV is disrupted. 63 Days ago we started Viceland and it is the fastest ‘younging down’ of a network in television history. Ever.”
The eccentric CEO and co-founder told media buyers that Vice had a strong heritage in digital and would continue to disrupt the media landscape.
“We started doing online and whenever you disrupt no-one says anything and then eventually they say ‘fuck you’ for actually doing it,” said smith.
“Then when you do it you get all the plaudits and laurels and sometimes the money.
In Vice’s case with the help of venture capital it has been able to raise hundreds of millions of dollars to expand and ramp up its global presence, including investments from News Corp and WPP.
“We did it with online and we are launching seven new verticals,” he said. “Our traffic has never been higher, we are the number one new media company in the world.
“These (events) are ostensibly for business assholes but online we are largest (in the Gen Y online video space) in the world. So fuck you.”
Smith noted the launch of its TV network Viceland two months ago was having a big impact.
“We are bringing millennials back to TV,” he said. “I don’t know why I’m so excited about that but I am.
“Last year I said I was going to launch 12 international channels in a year. Fuck that we haven’t done that,” he said before adding: “We have launched five already and we are going to launch 20 by the end of the year.
Vice did not provide details of the content offering in those soon to be launched channels, but it builds on the expansion plans announced by Vice last year.
“We are the fastest growing TV network in the fucking history of TV. 63 days (is all it took).”

Brands are supposed to be like ‘Ooh, Shane Smith is so edgy. He swears so much so he must be down the kids. Take my money.’

I must admit, i’m gen Y and I love Vice News. They are some of the best, most objective, hardcore news reporters on actual global affairs that matter.
