Viewers turn away from TV as networks go into Easter mode

School holidays and a lacklustre schedule saw viewers turn their backs on television last night.

The first Tuesday of the non-ratings period saw just one general entertainment show rate above 700,000 metro viewers.

Nine’s Big Bang Theory averaged 711,000 metro viewers, according to OzTAM’s overnight preliminary metro ratings.

The Big Bang Theory aired last night in the 7.30pm and 8pm timeslot

Nationally – including both metro and regional affiliate stations where the program is broadcast – The Big Bang Theory saw 1.041m viewers.

Airing in the same 7.30pm timeslot, Seven’s First Dates saw 668,000 metro viewers tune in.

In a night where ratings were dominated by news shows, Seven News was the only program to rate more than 1m metro viewers, wiht 1.086m tuning in.

First Dates was the most watched program across key advertising demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54, while nationally the blind dating show managed 1.013m.

Airing at the same time, SBS’ Great Continental Railway Journeys repeat episode also made its way into the top 20 with 445,000 metro viewers and 607,000 national viewers.

A Current Affair rated 756,000 metro viewers while ABC News managed 731,000 metro viewers.

Nationally, A Current Affair grabbed 1.087m while ABC News pulled 1.071m.

In overall audience share, Seven managed 18% ahead of Nine’s 17.2% share and Ten’s 12.4% share, managing to beat ABC after four consecutive losses.

Meanwhile ABC finished fourth overall with a share of 11.9%, beating SBS’ 7.1% share.
