Dr Mumbo

Vinyl’s big vision (vision to follow)

It’s been another week of unconventional updates from Dr Mumbo’s favourite, and indeed only, ASX-listed music company Vinyl Group.

In an ASX update which Vinyl labelled as price sensitive — suggesting it thought the information might move the share price — it shared an announcement labelled “FY26 vision”. Here it is in its entirety …

In the first slide, accompanied by an illustration of a bar chart going up without doing anything so dull as revealing actual numbers, Vinyl stated: “In FY24 we told a revenue story.”

In the second, featuring the logos of the brands Vinyl has acquired – Mediaweek, Serenade, Funkified Events and Concrete Playground – it added: “In FY25 we told a growth story.”

And in a third slide, featuring another squiggly upwards price chart, Vinyl (sort of) promised to stop losing money: “In FY26, we’re aiming to tell a profitability story.”

As Yoda might say: Do or do not. There is no aim.

Then the preso switched to a quick recap to assist hard-of-understanding shareholders what had just appeared in the previous three slides…

And then we turn to the plan, in all its glory, and indeed in just one glorious slide:

It reveals (in a non-revealing kind of way): “To accelerate the flywheel, our tech team went back to the drawing board, reimagining what an AI-powered media business could look like.”

Then in the bottom corner: “ETA September 2025”

And, other than a slide featuring photos of the management team, that’s it from the least informative price sensitive update that the ASX has ever seen.

Happily, the investor section on the Vinyl Group website allows for questions. Investor “Zidane” politely asked: “Hi team, nice vision there but is there meant to be an announcement planned with more detail to accompany this slide deck? The deck does not”

CEO Josh Simons jumped in to reply:

“Thanks for the question and for engaging with the vision. The FY26 Vision presentation was designed to provide a clear framework for understanding our updates over the coming year – a palette cleanser, a context setter, and a chance to step back and see the bigger picture before we dive into the detail. It’s about showing the line we’re drawing, not just the next dot. Our next detailed updates will arrive alongside our quarterly and annual results, as well as following the September AI rollout. Appreciate your interest and support. Josh”

It certainly is an inspiring answer. Next time Dr Mumbo is asked why he hasn’t done his work, he’ll explain that rather than completing the task, he’s produced a palette cleanser.
