Wake Up – what did you think of the show? And how do you think it will rate?
Most days at Mumbrella’s morning news meeting, we play The Ratings Game.
We’ve been playing it for about four years now.
The rules are simple. We pick a show that aired the day before and everyone shares their best guess for how it did.
When the overnight metro ratings come in from OzTAM at 8.36, the closest person is the winner. The furthest out has to make a round of tea.
Today, I’d like to invite you to play too.
As you’ll no doubt be aware, Ten’s new breakfast show Wake Up went to air for the first time today.
It ran from 6.30 to 8.30
How do you think it did?
And, if you saw it, what did you think of the show?
To join in the ratings game for one day only (with the only prize, glory) simply share your guess in the comment thread. By all means use a pseudonym.
A couple of hints… Ten’s last attempt, Breakfast, averaged 49,000 on its first day. Ten’s rivals are touting a number of 100,000 as the minimum it needs. Seven’s Sunrise and Nine’s Today tend to deliver 3-400,000.
So what’s your best guess?
I’ll get the ball rolling with a punt at 75,000.
What say you?
We’ll find out the winner this time tomorrow.
Tim Burrowes
I’m going to go 85,000. Who’s making the tea?
I’m taking a guess at 108,000 – some of the massive ad spend has to have made some impact.
I think it would be lucky to make the 100, 000 so I’ll put my guess in at 95, 000
At this stage I think Alex is making the tea Brooke… I’ll say 70,000 which would still be a major improvement on Wake Up’s predecessor Ten Breakfast’s debut.

I went high today for Australia’s Got Talent and will subsequently be making the tea, so going to shoot low this time – 50,000
I loved it. I hope it manages 90,000.

72, 500 is my punt. With viewer habits already firmly established and cash prize giveaways on Sunrise and Today, shifting viewers is going to be a challenge. A solid curiosity factor should serve them well enough on day one.

I liked it, I’m ashamed to say. 79k.

Aiming for 125,000 I think people are ready for a change.

I loved it. I really think it’ll grow into something fantastic in the weeks to come. I hope it manages 90,000.

I’m with Alex Hayes on this one. The media campaign has been fun, consistent, and very ‘now’. Got me changing channels. I reckon Wake Up will crack the 100,000 mark for its first outing. But the real test has just begun….

I watched for a while before flicking back to news. My initial thoughts are that the chemistry between the hosts seems lacking. They are seated very close together, and the wall TV looks a bit odd.
One positive, when the roving reporter was sent outside he did make a joke about being only 47m from the studio – refreshingly honest.
I’ll keep watching during the week and see how they go.
My tip on numbers….85k.

63,000. Milk, and half a sugar in mine thanks.

Guestimate of about 79,000.
So do you guys deliver tea, or is it pick-up only?
User ID not verified.
77,000.
It was OK, but I was hoping to see more differentiation from Today and Sunrise…

I will say 71,250. It was slow at times but Jimmy held it all together.

55,000, everyone here is guessing too high, many people in Melbourne are taking the Monday off and having a 4 day weekend (cup day public holiday)

68 000
I watched the first hour and was loving it! (although Sunrise’s 630am weather update is the best out of anyone’s – i need my weekly forecast!).
I loved Sam Mac, but felt Tash (the one on the left on the panel), was a bit awkward.
Look forward to seeing it succeed!

The news effort was awful – every segement was pre recorded albeit fairly recently, misses impact of a true live read. That will local news garbage will go pretty quickly in favour of a national bulletin.

Melb is a ghost town today so it will impact day 1 ratings. Next Monday is the big test – they have intentionally launched this week to allow for any ratings softness due to Mon in Melb and Cup Day.

62.5k you need to watch a channel to know its show. And no one watches TEN.

75,000 at most.
TEN would have more success with bringing back Cheez TV.

I’m a pessimist.
42,000.
On the plus side, I don’t drink tea so I won’t be demanding a cuppa when I win.

Forget the ratings – they are irrelevant. The show was poorly produced and executed. Bland 1970’s TV.

I’m going low at 42,000. And it will shrink from there. Nothing appealing about the entire premise

Going by the lack of Twitter feed, less that 100,000 – my guess 63,000. A bit clunky for the first show, and I couldn’t help feeling I was watching a morning version of The Project (perhaps with a little too much caffine?). I wish them well – b’fast TV can do with a bit of a shake up.

65k. Everyone in Melbourne has taken the day off and slept in. It might pick up on Wednesday.

58k … not enough people interested in even trying something new. And the
Cup holiday is more important!

I didn’t mind it, but I didn’t think it was anything ground-breaking and was hoping for more. Also whilst I appreciate a large proportion of the audience are parents, I was hoping they’d run more stories appealing to a younger audience ie young professionals as I think there’s a real opportunity here. I’m so bored of stories about parenting. The highlight for me was Sam Mac, he was honest & entertaining.
I’ll tune in again as understand they’re still getting the swing of it, but hoping for more next time. Viewing wise – my pick is 72,000.

58,000 I reckon, but I’m saying if they give it a chance, it will hit 100k by March next year

it’s all on three-hour delay in Perth so breakfast is cold and unappetising unlike the weather here. Lucky to get 39,000 viewers.

Going with 46,500. I haven’t seen any advertising for it but maybe I’m not the target market!

33 (Mumbrella viewers as at 1.35 pm)
+2 (Channel 7 and Channel 9 execs watching the ‘competition’)
+1 (Tim)
=36, double it to 72 (factoring in responses later today)
x 1000 (Melissa Doyle groupies, people fed up with Karl Stefanovic, and Channel Ten marketing)

I was impressed with how fast they nicked the viral Halloween video from Reddit. It’ll be later this afternoon before that gets picked up nby news.com.au and tomorrow before it makes it onto The Morning Show.

56000 I reckon!

I thought they were great, so tired of the other two channels, I hope they nail it, I say 63,000

1000, which will be followed by 1,000,000 for every day after that.
Whereupon it will be discovered that ” emma” has been appointed to do the ratings for channel ten

it was a welcome change to morning tv and they will only get better. We need an alternative to 7 and 9. I really like the location they have chosen.

61,000 – most people are too dedicated to their breakfast show to test out another one!

Should at least double the “Breakfast” debut, which launched earlier than planned, and the panel is more appealing. So my guesstimate is 100,000.

Dull, dull, dull — apart from the backdrop, nothing different to the other breakfast shows and chemistry between the hosts completely lacking. James Mathison puts me to sleep, Natasha (sorry, Tash) was way too try hard and not particularly polished or comfortable, Natarsha B (sorry, Tarsh) was the only one with any real warmth and authenticity. (Sam was pretty good too, taking the piss out of the distinct lack of interest from the locals). Having said all that, Channel 10 have done a good job building anticipation for the show so, I’m going with 74000 for first outing (discount factor applied for Melbourne public holiday), but I reckon it’s going to fall pretty quickly if this is all they have to offer.

At 7am I want news, weather and easy watching TV. Nothing too overwhelming for that time of the day while I’m having breakfast. What I was greeted with on Wake Up however was a poor attempt at a philosophical debate about children drinking alcohol, and a badly disguised discussion about sexism so some American woman could advertise her new book…
… I very quickly changed channels.
I’ll go for 97,000, and more than halving by Christmas!

56,000 for me. Looked a bit like a show from a caravan at a camp site. Following show 10 times better..Sarah Harris really capable… Ita good news too. Wish them well.

83,500. Curiosity would get the better of most people. Numbers may plummet somewhat tomorrow and in the coming days, but will pick up by week 3-4.
Ten knows how to promote upcoming TV shows. For ‘Wake Up’, they saturated outdoor, radio and their own network in promoting the show. I wish them all the best.

Update: It was 52,000 (although only the final 90 minutes was coded). https://mumbrella.com.au/wake-debuts-52000-187812
We have a winner: I’m proud to say it looks like it was Mumbrella’s media writer Megan Reynolds who was closest with a guess of 50,000.
Alex has already made the tea…
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
so 52,000 for a Sydney population of 4.576 million… meh pretty pathetic if you ask me

Dear Tim Smiths – the result of 52,000 is a national audience not Sydney.

I am late in joining this discussion. I have now seen this program and I was stunned. It was like watching car crash. What a shocker! Catering to the lowest common denominator with silly conversations and puerile competitions and the worst chat among the co-presenters imaginable with the women talking like they have no brain and the men being patronisingly condescending. What a mess! It won’t last: guaranteed!

Warren Buffett talks about only investing in businesses with a ‘wide moat’. From the looks of the ratings, Wake Up won’t be crossing Sunrise & Today’s moat anytime soon.
User ID not verified.
Anyone have yesterday’s ratings for Wake Up. The show was an absolute car crash, an 8 car pile up in fact. Worst most complex competition ever, in the rain with poor old Ita and a speed boat thrown in.
