Walkley Award-winning cartoonist Jon Kudelka joins The Saturday Paper

Schwartz Media’s The Saturday Paper has welcomed Walkley Award-winning cartoonist Jon Kudelka to its team.

Kudelka was previously a long-time contributor to The Australian and The Mercury.

Kudelka won a Walkley Award in 2018 for his piece ‘From The Heart’. Drawn following the response to the Uluru Statement from the Turnbull government, it features a raised middle finger drawn in the position of Uluru. Kudelka drew the piece for The Australian, where he had worked since the late 1990s.

Kudelka said he was looking forward to a change in pace for his work schedule.

“When I was a very young cartoonist, I attended a talk by John Clarke where he said that one of the important things about satire is that you can do too much of it,” said Kudelka.

“Thirty years later I’ve finally taken this advice and cut back a bit. It will be an exciting change working on a weekly paper focusing on longer-form journalism and I look forward to finding out what I come up with.”

Maddison Connaughton, editor of The Saturday Paper, said Kudelka’s work is a perfect fit for the paper.

“A great political cartoon can, in a single frame, cut through all the spin and hot air whipped up around the most important issues of the day,” said Connaughton.

“Whenever I see one of Jon’s cartoons, it reminds me of this fact. They get to the truth of the story – which is what all journalism hopes to do.

“I can’t wait to see what Jon does at The Saturday Paper.”

Kudelka’s move to The Saturday Paper follows a similar choice by former The Australian journalist Rick Morton earlier this month. Previously a social affairs writer for the News Corp Australia title, Morton joined The Saturday Paper as a senior reporter after a brief sabbatical.

Kudelka and Morton’s departures are two of several from The Australian in the last 12 months.

Columnist and sketch writer James Jeffrey left after 16 years to become a speechwriter for Labor leader Anthony Albanese, investigative reporter Anthony Klan departed after 15 years, business reporter Ben Butler left to join The Guardian, and football writer Ray Gatt also departed the title.

Kudelka’s first issue will hit newsstands on Saturday, November 16, 2019.
