Last days to enter the 2019 Walkley Awards

Entries for the 64th Walkley Awards for Excellence in Australian Journalism close this Saturday August 31 at 11.59pm. The awards seek to recognise the work Australian journalists are proudest of and judge it against the best from their peers.

It’s never been easier of more affordable to enter the Walkley Awards, with the entry fee halved this year to $150 (and free for MEAA members), and the entry system fully online.

The Awards are open to all Australian media for work published on any platform between September 1, 2018 and August 31, 2019. There are 30 categories including Awards for photojournalism, documentary, non-fiction books and cartoons. As always, digital journalism can be entered into any category.

Journalists are encouraged to review the category explainer on the Walkleys website to see where their work fits best. The Walkley Foundation also invites the public to submit nominations for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism (chosen by the Walkley Directors) through the entry site.

“The Walkley Awards celebrate the highest standard of Australian journalism. As the industry develops we expect to see its leadership and our award-winners grow to reflect the diversity of the Australian population. There is still work to be done, and for us it starts with making sure our programs, opportunities and awards are accessible to the widest possible range of emerging, aspiring and elite journalists,” said Walkley Judging Board chair Lenore Taylor.

2018’s Walkley Awards saw The Daily Telegraph’s Sharri Markson, The Australian’s Hedley Thomas, Kate McClymont, Tracey Spicer, Lorna Knowles and Alison Branley all recognised for their work.
