Walkley Foundation announces 2019 Mid-Year Celebration finalists

The Walkley Foundation has named the finalists for its 2019 Mid-Year Celebration. Those selected are peer-judged and chosen on the basis of journalistic excellence.

The awards up for grabs include Young Australia Journalist of the Year, Freelancer of the Year, Best Industrial Reporting and the inaugural Media Diversity Australia Award.

The winners of the awards will be announced in Sydney at the Mid-Year Celebration on June 26. The winning recipients will also be named at this event for the Jacoby-Walkley Scholarship with Nine, the Media Super Scholarship with Seven, the William Buckland Foundation Fellowship with The Age and the Sean Dorney Grant for Pacific Journalism.

Last year Laura Murphy-Oates took home the title of 2018 Young Australian Journalist of the Year for her work at SBS including Young and Black, Kids of Kalgoorlie and Vanished: Canada’s missing women. Murphy-Oates also won the Public Service Journalism and Longform categories.

Murphy-Oates was flown to the US to undertake two weeks’ of work experience with Buzzfeed, The New York Times, Columbia Journalism Review, Twitter and Quartz.

They recognise the work of journalists aged 28 and under who demonstrate excellence in the fundamental tenets of the craft as well as the ability to present distinctive and original journalism that pushes the boundaries of the profession.
