Watchdog: Ten robbed deaf viewers of fully enjoying Obama’s big day’

The Ten Network has been ticked off by the media watchdog for failing to provide deaf viewers with captions for President Obama’s inauguration.

According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, Ten breached the Broadcasting Services Act by not providing the captions for the live event.

“By not capturing this event, Ten has not only breached its regulatory obligations but deprived its hearing impaired audience of fully participating in this historic moment,” said Chris Chapman, ACMA’s chairman.

The TV networks are obliged to provide captions on all news coverage, but Ten had not intially categorised the January event as news, said ACMA.
