We Are Explorers is crowdfunding to reforest Sydney’s seas

We Are Explorers is teaming up with Operation Crayweed to restore Sydney’s seas.

The announcement:

Did you know that 70km of Sydney’s underwater forest is missing? But there’s a proven solution, which is why leading digital publisher We Are Explorers is launching their new crowdfunding campaign to reforest Sydney’s seas.

Winner of Mumbrella’s Travel Publication of the Year We Are Explorers is teaming up with Operation Crayweed, a band of scientists who are successfully creating crayweed forests where they once thrived, before going missing due to water pollution in the 80s, and are restoring vital marine habitat across Sydney’s coastline.

Founder of We Are Explorers Henry Brydon says the goal is to raise $42,000 to fund the underwater planting of an entire crayweed site.

“The Underwater Forest Project is about giving nature a nudge, creating crayweed forest where they were once dominant, so that they can return to a self-sustaining forest and habitat.”

“Getting Australians to pitch in for a cause in their backyard is what it’s all about! Plus, donors will quickly see their impact! Researchers have observed 20m² of planted crayweed across a site expand naturally to 400m² within two and a half years and 4000m² within six,” he said.

“Since establishing in 2014 we’ve taken a fresh approach to digital publishing – as a BCorp our vision is to inspire future generations of everyday explorers and help them use their connection to earth for good. As far as we’re concerned it’s imperative that all businesses use their platforms as a force for good in any way they can”

In 2020, We Are Explorers Rewilded the Snowies with Keep It Cool by planting 8,000 native trees in the Snowy Mountains, smashing their $30,000 target by $10,000! The year before that $30,000 was raised to Protect the Daintree with the Rainforest 4 Foundation by purchasing over a hectare of land in the Daintree Rainforest, returning it to the Daintree Rainforest National Park and the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, so that it could be preserved forever.

The Underwater Forest Project Crowdfunding officially commences Tuesday 8th November and will run for just under a month.
