Weather dampens cricket audience for Nine as Seven wins the night

A rainy day in Adelaide hit Nine’s cricket audiences yesterday as Seven again won the night with a 90-minute episode of Home and Away close to hitting the one million mark.

The first session of the second day of the test match with India drew 435,000 metro viewers, down from 518,000, with the second and third sessions watched by 440,000 and 610,000 respectively. Both were down sharply from day one audiences of 637,000 and 843,000 with rain interruptions not helping the broadcaster.

Home and Away, which ran for 90 minutes from 7pm, was the most watched non-news show of the night according to Oztam overnight rankings, with 973,000 viewers, almost 150,000 more than Tuesday night’s episode.

It helped Seven win the night with a share of 22.8 per cent, ahead of Nine on 19.7 per cent. Ten took 12.7 per cent, followed by ABC with 10.5 per cent and SBS One with 4.1 per cent.

Nine’s top rated non-news and current affairs show was UK-based Customs which aired at 8pm and drew 739,000, followed by another airport security program, To Catch a Smuggler, which aired immediately after Customs and attracted 642,000.

The Project was Ten’s top rated entertainment program with 518,000 tuning in at 7pm.

Both Nine and Ten showed movies last night, with Knight and Day on Nine, which started at 9.30pm, watched by 446,000 viewers while Jack Black’s School of Rock, which began an hour earlier, drawing 391,000.

News again dominated the night with Seven News at 6pm winning the night with 1.1m viewers, and the 6.30pm slot taking 1.09m. Nine News captured 962,000 at 6pm with the second half hour 923,000.

ABC News at 7pm was the public broadcaster’s top program of the night with 719,000 viewers.
