Why kilts and building sites don’t mix
Using comedy Scots to sell Angus beef products to Aussies has been one of the less attractive trends of recent months.
This effort for Four ‘N Twenty pies doesn’t necessarily improve the situation.
The guilty party is Clemenger BBDO Melbourne.
Hmm let me see I lived in Scotland for the majority of my life…did I ever once see a builder in a kilt? Nope. Too dangerous cause we don’t wear any underwear with our kilts and you want to protect that area and not leave it in danger of being caught in machinery.
And yes I know it’s an ad but really if the best you can do to promote Angus Beef is to use the old ‘Scots wear kilts’ routine then it’s getting a bit old.
And here is an ad for Scott’s Porridge Oats that uses the kilt to better effect:

Great to see some creatives being creative rather than using tired old stereotypes (NOT). Can I nominate this one for Gruen??

What a surprise another whinge from Scott Rhodie. Hey Tim, can you get someone on the podcast who doesn’t always complain about how things are so much better in the UK?

Both David and Scott are idiots. Its funny, its engaging and its shot well. Boys, you must be from the incumbent.

Hilarious! Won’t win at Cannes but the punters will love it! (Remember them?)

It speaks to directly to the Australia’s pie-eaters, keeps people watching and I can already here cries of “Garr, Lachlan, bend from yer knees lad!” echoing across the nation’s building sites.
I like it.

Hey sick of me,
Too much of a wee jessie that you have to remain anonymous?
My only problem with the ad is that it lacks creativity. Which seems to happen a lot lately in the UK and in Australia.

I should also add that I probably wouldn’t enjoy any ad that plays on an Australian stereotype either. If an ad ran in the UK with a bunch of Australians standing round a BBQ drinking 4x calling each other Bruce and talking about Bondi I’d class that as being a lack of creativity also.

I reckon the average aussie male (yeah the pie eater not the ad wanker) will love it.
Great work.

A Scottish mate of mind just reminded me aboot somehin’ that ah’m probably no annoyed by this ad as much as that ah’m still pissed off at the crappy Angry Angus ads.
It lacks some creativity but as Maria says it will probably work for it’s target demographic.

I’m a punter and think its great.
Well shot, regardless of whether it features some technical incorrectness. Certainly craps all over the horror that Hungry Jacks produced a few months ago.

Well, ahm right Scottish tae, and ah pure thocht it wiz quite gemme. Cos wae maist mass advertisin’, ye huv tae appeal tae the ‘lowest common denominator’ so thit yer average pie-muncher hopefully has a 30-sec thought continuum that goes like this…tartan, kilts, beards, Angus, beef – aww, right, noo I get it! An’ tae get a chuckle wi the nice execution..well that’s pure braw man. Ahm even gonnae try wan a these Angus pies fur masel’ this weekend.

Mental note 1…Scott has nothing and interesting to say and is void or awesomeness.
Mental note 2.. if Scott asks you to a party…say no.

David,
Can I assume you haven’t mastered the art of communication yet or how to use an ellipsis?

It works perfect for its aim. Being creative doesnt mean you have to reinvent the wheel. Its just using something people associate with in a way to get your message across.
Only ad wankers who pretend they are always stifled by their clients have to look for the arthouse factor. Its not film school, its advertising

What’s wrong with this is that Scottish people don’t eat pies.
They should do a proper Scottish ad for Mars bars

I am an average Australian and this ad hits the spot 110% with me and I am probably sure that other average Australian’s will see the that the agency responsible for the campaign has done a brilliant job connecting to Australians
Scott seems to think anything created in Australia by Australian’s is crap. He is Always bitching about how bad we Aussies are and how little respect for Australian we have.
If you don’t like us Scott ‘I am a Social Media Guru’ Rhodie, then bog off to what ever deep dark hole you crawled out of.

Deep fried Mars bars?

Deep fried Australians?
Oh god, now I’m reminded of that Ad for the “Swedish” brand where the “Svedish” girl was talking in the high-pitched voice with the Aussie twang all over it.
Here’s a thought, next time you do an ethnic ad. Hire me. I can do a Cork accent.

Some people say pictures win pitches, they are wrong. If you want to win a pitch your best bet is to get a good piece of skirt. True story

Scottish people don’t eat pies???
are you kidding?
sure, our pies are different (better i think)- but we eat them by the bucket load. go to a football match and try them there. they come in wee silver foil trays and are brilliant with broon sauce
what we DONT eat are deep fried mars bars – they’re only for the tourists.
deep fried pizza on the other hand…..mmmmmm
