WIN Tasmania axes local news production with Wollongong move

WIN News Hobart will no longer produce its weeknight bulletins from Tasmania, with the network set to consolidate in a ‘central presentation location’ in New South Wales.

From August 17, WIN News’ weeknight bulletin, which is presented from Hobart, will be prepared and presented in Wollongong, based on content supplied from Tasmania.

Lucy Breaden and Brent Costelloe are currently the local newsreaders

On weekends, WIN News will switch to Ten’s Eyewitness News First at 5 bulletin.

It is unclear how many stuff are affected at this point, however they have been informed of the decision and will be consulted as the restructure moves forward. It is not yet clear whether newsreaders Lucy Breaden and Brent Costelloe will be redeployed.

The Examiner is reporting some staff were told by management while others found out through social media. According to the ABC, WIN News Tasmania have said no journalists or camera crew staff will lose jobs.

WIN Network CEO Andrew Lancaster said almost all networks these days have “central presentation location” for news, noting WIN was simply adopting the “industry standard”.

“Whilst the presentation location of our weeknightly WIN News is changing, WIN’s newsrooms in Tasmania will continue to provide the stories of interest to Tasmanian viewers as well as WIN News updates as normal throughout the day on weekdays,” he said.

“Technology allows us to present the news from a central location which creates a more efficient way to deliver that news. In this case it means utilising existing facilities.”

Ten’s former Bachelorette, Georgia Love, was formerly a presenter for WIN News.

It comes as Sky News prepares to run a free to air channel through WIN, from September 2.
