Winners of the 2022 Australian Podcast Awards revealed

The 2022 Australian Podcast Awards took place on Monday night, with a range of podcasters taking home prizes.

The announcement:

The winners of the 2022 Australian Podcast Awards, powered by iHeart, have been announced at the red carpet event celebrating the best of the best podcasting moments and talent across 31 categories with Australian history podcast, The Last Outlaws, taking the top award for Podcast Of The Year for a thoroughly memorable audio experience.

The main prize was collected by Leroy Parsons, a descendant of Jimmy Governor, podcast narrator and co-writer. The Last Outlaws is an intimate portrait of two Aboriginal men, as well as an exploration of the society that would become Australia and the painful issue of stolen ancestral remains.

In his acceptance speech, Leroy said, “(Jimmy) may have committed those crimes, at the end of the day he was a husband and he was a father and people forget that about him, and doing this podcast has enabled my family to claim him and own him and be proud of him as a man and be proud of who he is and was.”

Presenting the award, Osher Günsberg, said, “the podcast skilfully blends both archival research and oral history into an enthralling narrative, with exquisite sound design, beautifully visual moments, and careful scripting all for a very important story.”

Hosted by ACRA award-winning host of The Night Show on the KIIS Network, Mitch Churi, the ceremony celebrated the country’s top podcasting creators – from Best True Crime to Best Documentary, to Best Sport and Best Sex & Relationships podcasts.

Laura Byrne and Brittany Hockley’s, Life Uncut, took home the Listeners’ Choice Award for the third year in a row, and Dan Ilic, A Rational Fear, took home the Best Comedy Podcast for the third year in a row, cementing their titles as the Queens and the King of the Australian Podcast scene.

With years of investigating and uncovering hidden secrets, Patrick Abboud’s, The Greatest Menace: Inside the Gay Prison Experiment took home two golds for Best True Crime and Best Creativity.

Patrick said upon receiving the award, “This podcast took 3 years of our life but we persevered through the many closed doors as it was a story that just had to be told.”

Taking listeners on a powerful and intimate journey, Tender: Roia Atmar took home two highly deserving wins for Best Factual and Best Documentary Podcast.

In a new category added this year, was Australia’s favourite parenting author and educator Maggie Dents, Parental As Anything, called out for being coherent, fresh and useful for Best Parenting Podcast.

Best Interview was awarded to Short Black with Sandra Sully, who commented “We elevate the stories of everyday Aussie women who do remarkable things but do not see accolades – they are just real and they all have remarkable stories to tell.”

Other winners included radionotes for Best Entertainment Podcast for the simplicity and practicality that make it a must-listen, and Mamamia took home Best Sales House for their podcasts for the second year in a row. Who Is Daniel Johns? was awarded the coveted Spotlight Award for his fascinating content.

Over 77 judges listened to nearly 650 submissions to find these winners, and over 62,000 Australians voted in this year’s Listeners’ Choice poll.

Matt Deegan, director at the Australian Podcast Awards, said: “Each year Australia leads the way with amazing talent and creativity that entertains, informs and inspires – This year we have seen another incredible amount of entries and the awards winners truly represent the best in the country. It is incredible to see creators on different paths be celebrated at the Australian Podcast Awards ceremony. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees across our 31 diverse categories.”
