RussellSupermarket chain Woolworths has appointed Russell Mahoney, a former head of communications to former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, to head communications for its retail supermarket division.

Mahoney is currently senior vice president of strategic communications at communications consultancy FTI Consulting which he joined in March.

He was previously head of communications and a senior adviser to Julia Gillard between May 2009 and May 2012.

“Russell is a high calibre and experienced communications professional and we are pleased that he is joining the team.  He will be the Communications Manager of Woolworths Supermarkets, reporting into Claire Kimball as Head of Group Communications,” said a spokeswoman for Woolworths.
