Woolworths hires former Gillard advisor as supermarkets head of comms
Supermarket chain Woolworths has appointed Russell Mahoney, a former head of communications to former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, to head communications for its retail supermarket division.
Mahoney is currently senior vice president of strategic communications at communications consultancy FTI Consulting which he joined in March.
He was previously head of communications and a senior adviser to Julia Gillard between May 2009 and May 2012.
“Russell is a high calibre and experienced communications professional and we are pleased that he is joining the team. He will be the Communications Manager of Woolworths Supermarkets, reporting into Claire Kimball as Head of Group Communications,” said a spokeswoman for Woolworths.
Mahoney replaces Kristen Young who is leaving the company after joining in July last year “for a new and exciting opportunity”, the spokeswoman said.
Mahoney will take up the position in the new year.

This wouldn’t be Woolies first ex-government hire. Are they trying to influence Canberra? Doesn’t sound good news for farmers or local producers….

Mr Groucho, Google ‘Woolworths and Canberra politics or ACCC” and see how many worrying links come up – from obliterating competition, fixing the petrol price, to monopolies with farmers. And then come back to me with how well that hat fits.
