Wotif asks Australians to find the next big tourist attraction

Online travel site Wotif has asked Australians what ‘The Next Big Thing’ is to create a new Australian icon to match the Big Banana and the Big Pineapple.

The PR-driven campaign created by Ogilvy and Opr, asks Australians to vote on what they think the next big Australian landmark should be, Wotif will then release a shortlist out of the thousands of suggestions and eventually the public will vote on Australia’s new landmark.

The campaign is part of Wotif’s 18th birthday celebrations.

Hosted on Facebook, a social video gives Australians some suggestions for The Next Big Thing, including the Ibis (Bin Chicken) and Speedos (Budgie Smugglers).

Ewen Pettit, strategy director, Ogilvy Brisbane, said in a statement: “The brand proposition speaks directly to a nation of passionate travellers and the Aussie for travel platform positions Wotif as a trusted travel mate in-the-know..

“For many Australians, the Wotif brand is synonymous with travel. Backed by 18 years of data and local knowledge, Wotif has supported Aussie travel experiences and knows what makes Aussies tick.”

Daniel Finch, managing director at Wotif, added: “From the Big Bin Chicken (Ibis) in Sydney, to the Big Peanut in Kingaroy, to the Big Kilt in Glen Innes, since nominations commenced we’ve received thousands of entries and widespread involvement from Aussies vying for their town, city or suburb to be crowned the home of the ‘Next Big Thing’.”
