X-Men: Days of Future Past beat Godzilla in its opening Australian weekend
X-Men: Days of Future Past became the biggest box office draw of the year in Australia smashing the record set by Godzilla last week, with the seventh film in the franchise taking $8.36m in tickets across 684 screens.
The film, which stars Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Pacquin, Peter Dinklage and a host of other well-known actors, sees Wolverine sent to the past in an effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
Since its premiere on Thursday it has made nearly $8.5m in the Australian box office. While Godzilla made $6.767m last weekend the film which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston was relegated to second place taking $2.44m .
Comedy Bad Neighbours continues to do well taking in $1.829m across 318 screens, taking its total Australian box office to $14.613m.
The top ten remains largely similar to last weekend’s, with The Other Woman sitting at third place. However, The Grand Budapest Hotel has climbed above Chef having taken in $359,037 across 240 screens compared to Chef’s $358,687 across 222 screens.
Belle remains in 7th place after making $232,215 across 106 screens, while The Amazing Spider-man 2: Rise of Electro has dropped to eighth after taking in $204,374 across 174 screens.
The Lego Movie and Sunshine On Leith round out the top ten with the animated kids movie taking $163,629 across 212 screens and Sunshine on Leith managing $157,892 across 50 screens.
