7Mate tops Perth ratings thanks to AFL

7mate logoSecondary channel 7Mate took a huge 22.8 per cent share of Perth’s free to air television audience on Friday night.

It was the highest share ever delivered by a secondary channel in any market and, it also appears to be the first time that a digital channel has beaten all of its primary rivals.

The huge share came as a result of 7Mate showing live coverage of Fremantle vs Essendon. 7Mate began showing AFL games live last month, after previously showing them in Perth on delay on Seven.

7Mate’s 22.8 per cent share was just ahead of Seven’s 20.3 per cent share. ABC1 had a 13.3 per cent share of the Perth audience. Nine had a share of 10.6 per cent while Ten had 7.5 per cent – only fractionally ahead of Go on 7.4 per cent.

Seven’s strong performance in sport stretched into Saturday, with a simultaneous broadcast of AFL, horse racing and V8 across Seven, 7Two and 7Mate. Seven said its sporting offering reached a national audience of 2.5m.

Meanwhile Nine won the ratings week, with a Sunday to Monday metro share of 25.9 per cent according to preliminary ratings from OzTAM. This was just ahead of Seven’s 23.7 per cent. ABC1 was third for the week with 12.2 per cent, followed by Ten’s 10.4 per cent.

SBS1 finished in a dead heat with Go and 7Two, with all of them on 4 per cent for the week.
