ABC digital radio to broadcast Beatles special

ABC Radio is broadcasting a weekend special dedicated to The Beatles to mark the 40th anniversary of a statment released by Paul McCartney widely considered the official announcement of the group’s break-up.

The broadcast will start from 8am, April 10 and continue until midnight April 11. Content will include an in-depth history of the band, interviews and recordings from their visits to BBC studios and documentaries.

It follows special ABC digital radio broadcasts dedicated to the historic Apollo 11 moon landing mission, a musical trip back to Woodstock, the 2009 Melbourne International Arts Festival, the 10th anniversary of East Timor’s independence referendum and Australian music month.

On the Beatles special, Stuart Matchett ABC digital radio content director, said: “Most of the material that’s in the BBC Radio archives would never have been broadcast in Australia before.

“With such an auspicious anniversary upon us and now having the ability to create special event digital radio broadcasts, we felt it was high time the Australian public heard it.”

ABC digital radio can be heard in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
