ABC director of radio Kate Dundas resigns

dundasKate Dundas director of radio for the ABC has announced her resignation and will leave the public broadcaster in July after five yeas in the role.

During her tenure the ABC audience grew to record levels, growing from a combined share of 21.2 per cent and a combined reach of 3.8m people in 2008 to a combined share of 24.6 per cent and a combined reach of 4.6m today.

“Kate has been an inspired leader of ABC Radio and a much valued member of the ABC Executive over the last five years. She always said she felt five years was about the right period of time to serve as the head of Radio – and I am disappointed I have been unable to change her mind about that,” said Mark Scott ABC managing director, in a statement.

“Her track record in terms of audience impact and innovation speaks for itself. Day-in, day-out the ABC’s radio services create a deep, personal connection between millions of Australians and the public broadcaster.”

“While a difficult decision to reach, I feel it is absolutely the right time for me to hand over the stewardship of what is obviously my favourite part of the ABC. I have no other firm plans in place at this stage, other than to take a short break and then consider what other interesting challenges there are for me to do.” said Dundas.

“It’s been a truly great experience, a wonderful ride in fact and a privilege to lead such talented and dedicated teams that work so hard each day to engage audiences in more ways than ever before. We’ve achieved much together and put strategies in place to ensure audiences continue to enjoy what ABC Radio is able to offer into the future.”

Dundas will finish at the ABC in July 2014 and will take up a scholarship with the Vincent Fairfax Fellowship through the Centre for Ethical Leadership at the University of Melbourne.

No replacement has been named for the role.
