ABC ‘greatly saddened’ by Peter Roebuck death

The ABC has issued a statement following the sudden death of cricket reporter Peter Roebuck, who was covering Australia’s test series in South Africa for the ABC and The Sydney Morning Herald.

ABC managing director Mark Scott said in a statement:

All at the ABC are greatly saddened at the news of the death of Peter Roebuck in South Africa.

Peter was an indispensible part of the ABC’s summer of cricket, providing commentary that was wise and insightful about the game he played and loved. He was a scholar of cricket and he would speak and write of it with great knowledge and passion.

Our thoughts are with Peter’s family and friends and his close colleagues who worked alongside him in the ABC commentary box.

Peter Roebuck will be missed by millions who listen to ABC cricket, around Australia and across the world.

Roebuck’s career included positions as a columnist for the Herald, The Age and Cricinfo, as well as a commentator.

In an obituary in the Herald, Roebuck was described as an “eccentric contrarian” who lived “an austere, almost ascetic life”.
