ABC taps ex-Nine and News Corp talent as its head of marketing

Karen Madden is set to join ABC as its head of marketing, replacing Jocelin Abbey who left the role to join Guardian Australia as director of growth this month.

Madden joins from Taronga Zoo, where she has held the title of director of marketing, communications and fundraising since September 2020.

Madden has also spent time at Nine as group marketing director, as well as holding senior marketing roles at News Corp Australia, Woolworths and Goodman Fielder.

On the appointment, ABC director audiences Leisa Bacon said: “We’re delighted to have someone of Karen’s talent and experience join our award-winning ABC marketing team. Her extensive industry knowledge and a passion for people and the media provides a very adaptable skill set, which will help to drive the ABC’s marketing efforts forward in a changing landscape.”

A spokesperson for Taronga Conservation Society, Australia said: “Karen Madden has played an important role at Taronga, and her guidance and leadership has strengthened our organisation as we navigated a challenging period. We are very grateful to Karen for her contribution and wish her all the best in her new role.”

Madden starts at the ABC on 29 November.
