ABC iview’s mobile app is one of the most downloaded apps in Australia on iTunes.

The announcement:

The award-winning ABC iview mobile app is one of the top 10 most downloaded apps in Australia and New Zealand, according to figures released by Apple.

ABC iview is number one in the entertainment category and is more popular than Kindle, YouTube, Foxtel Go and The SMH for ipad.

The iview app, which was also recently awarded Best Application for a Mobile by AIMIA, was updated in June 2012 to include streaming over iPhone as well as iPad, and can now be viewed via 3G as well as wi-fi.

The ABC iview app has overtaken PCs as the most popular platform for viewing ABC TV programs online, representing 53% of all iview plays in April 2013.

Since its launch in December 2010, the app has amassed close to 2.5 million downloads and attracts more than 550,000 unique users per month.

ABC’s Controller of TV Multiplatform, Arul Baskaran said the ABC had delivered a staggering eight million program plays via the app last month.

“The real story here is a dramatic shift in how Australians are consuming content on tablets and mobile,” he said.

“As a public broadcaster our focus is on making ABC content as easily accessible as possible. Our team is working on some exciting new features for the app which we look forward to launching later this year.”

In April, iview set a new record for total monthly program plays across all platforms and devices of 15.4 million.

The Top 25 All-Time Free Apps for iPad chart included apps made available in Australia and New Zealand.
