ABC stations to move to digital in Canberra next month

ABC Radio National, ABC Jazz, Triple J Unearthed and ABC Grandstand will join 666 ABC Canberra as digital stations in the country’s capital next month.

The announcement:

September 23, 2011 –

From Wednesday 5 October 2011, ABC Radio National, ABC Jazz, triple j Unearthed and ABC Grandstand will join 666 ABC Canberra in the DAB+ digital radio broadcasting trial currently underway in Canberra.

Offering better sound quality, clearer reception and easier tuning, digital radio gives Canberra audiences the opportunity to experience some of their favourite ABC Radio services, along with new content offers during the trial broadcast period which runs until end July 2012.

Due to the limited bandwidth available during this scientific trial, not all ABC Radio stations are able to participate. Of those services to be made available, the AM service of ABC Radio National will benefit greatly from the better sound quality of digital radio. The other three stations – ABC Jazz, triple j Unearthed and ABC Grandstand are digital-only stations not available on analogue radio.

For those other ABC Radio flagship networks not included in the current trial – ABC Classic FM, ABC NewsRadio and triple j – all are available on the FM band in Canberra and many DAB+ digital radio receivers pick-up FM broadcasts.

666 ABC Canberra was switched on earlier this month and has since received positive feedback from digital radio listeners.

Digital Radio is not replacing current services; it simply provides another choice in how audiences can receive 666 ABC Canberra and ABC Radio National, and offers more choice through ABC Jazz, triple j Unearthed and ABC Grandstand.
