The announcement:

The ABC is pleased to announce that it will be the host broadcaster of the 2013 Walkley Awards. As official Media Partner, the ABC will be broadcasting the gala awards ceremony live in Brisbane on Thursday, November 28.

ABC Managing Director, Mark Scott said, “After a few years of delayed telecasts we are keen to bring the awards live to audiences via a special ‘Walkleys pop-up channel’ on ABC3.”

The ABC has provided production support for the Walkleys for the past 10 years, but is now stepping into the role of host broadcaster.

“Our commitment to quality journalism means the ABC should be the destination where the audience celebrates the best of the profession across print, radio, television and online,” Mr Scott said.

Laurie Oakes, Chair of the Walkley Advisory Board said, “We are delighted that after a long association with SBS the ABC has agreed to partner with us to broadcast this year’s gala awards and to showcase on the night the most outstanding journalism in this country.

“Broadcasting the event live means that our guests in the room will be able to tweet, eliminating the concern about spoiling the results for our TV audience.”

The Awards will be broadcast on ABC3 at 9pm (AEDT) and streamed live at ABC online.

Further announcements will be made later regarding the hosts and other event details.
