ABC’s OzPod conference announces final line-up and ticket giveaway

The ABC’s podcasting conference, OzPod – now in its second year – has revealed its final program and a ticket giveaway for Mumbrella readers.

OzPod will take place on Friday 8 September at the ABC headquarters in Ultimo and feature over 30 leading voices from the podcasting industry.

Newly announced speakers include:

Martin Van Beynen: The researcher and host of Black Hands – A Family Mass Murder, which received more than 2m downloads and hit number one on the charts in Australia, the UK, Ireland and New Zealand will speak on a panel entitled ‘Ethics is not a dirty word’ along with Rachael Brown (Trace), Siobhan McHugh (Phoebe’s Fall), Anna Prietland (Casefile) and Sarah Macdonald (The Full Catastrophe). The panel will explore the real victims of true-crime podcasting, and how podcasters can walk the ethical line between investigative journalism and the audience’s thirst for grisly details about murder and mayhem.

Van Beynen: True crime podcaster

Benjamin Riley: The co-host and producer of Queers – a fortnightly podcast which takes a critical look at political, health and social issues facing LGBTI communities – will join Kaitlyn Plyley (Just a Spoonful), Dr Lauren Rosewarne (University of Melbourne) and Lorena Alam (Indigenous Unit, ABC) to discuss whether podcasting is too “straight, white, able-bodied and blokey”, and how the audio space can be a powerful tool for the marginalised. The panel will also feature Beverley Wang from It’s Not a Race, who will address race, racism, culture and identity issues.

Charlie Clausen: Following acting roles in Blue Heelers, Home & Away and McLeod’s Daughters, Clausen now hosts TOFOP and 2 Guys, 1 Cup with Wil Anderson. Clausen will present a 10-minute supercharge session on taking action once you have an idea for a podcast.

The new names join previously announced speakers including Osher Günsberg (Network Ten, Brisbane Hit105), Rachael Brown (Trace), Nick Quah (US, Hot Pod), Claire Tonti (Planet Broadcasting), Kellie Riordan (ABC Audio Studios), Jay Walkerden (Nova Entertainment), Sharon Taylor (Omny Studio), Adam Martin (Acast), Richard Fidler (Conversations), James Cridland (podnews.net) plus the international keynote guest, Jenn White (US) of Making Oprah and WBEZ Chicago.

Content makers, broadcasters, presenters, producers, journalists, media industry professionals, and those starting out in podcasting can attend the not-for-profit conference for $99. OzPod 2017 will also be broadcast live on ABC Digital Radio, hosted by Jess O’Callaghan.
