Ad spend in gambling sector peaks yearly at $43.2m, finds Nielsen

Nielsen has released data for the estimated ad spend of the gambling sector for 2019, 2020 and 2021 up to September.

The data shows a peak in every year in September and October, around the time of spring racing carnivals and football finals, with the peak totalling around $43.2 million.

According to Nielsen, Sportsbet was the biggest gambling advertiser on TV in 2020, spending nearly twice as much as its next competitor. During the 2020 peak period, Sportsbet ran 135 unique creative ads on TV, the highest in the sector.

In terms of 2021, Sportsbet has launched its ‘Bet with Mates‘ campaign via its in-house team. Neds has also launched its ‘The Punting God’ campaign.

TAB released its ‘Jab For Your Local‘ campaign via M&C Saatchi, which also encourages people to get vaccinated against COVID 19.

Due to a methodology change in Nielsen’s digital capture, year-on-year comparison is not available.
