Adding Addo to Corbett’s pyre of journalistic shame

Dr Mumbo is a big fan of the AFR’s Rear Window column. Sadly there aren’t enough outlets these days who are as fearless in picking fights.

Just ask any of the media players who’ve been bestowed a mean nickname by the Joe Aston-led column.

But Dr Mumbo does wonder whether new Rear Window recruit (and Bauer Media refugee) Bryce Corbett is in danger of getting himself a nickname all of his own.

Today’s column returns to the theme of new Bauer boss Nick Chan’s apparent boys club tendencies, labelling him Nick “Action Man” Chan.

Referring to yesterday’s news that Bauer Media’s digital boss Carl Hammerschmidt is leaving the company, Corbett made the somewhat unexpected claim that former B&T editor Tim ‘Addo’ Addington was the new head of the company’s digital division.

“In a business brimming with smart women, providing content for smart women, we’ve no doubt Mr Addington was the best man for the job,” opined Corbett.

Which would indeed be comment-worthy, if true. Not least because these days Addington runs his own PR agency, focusing on delivering trade press PR for media companies and agencies. One of his clients being Bauer Media.

Dr Mumbo suspects that when Corbett called Bauer to ask who was replacing Hammerschmidt, he was referred to Addington for comment, and got the wrong end of the stick. Why he didn’t then ring Addo for clarification is a mystery to Dr Mumbo.

The column has now been entirely re-edited online, with Corbett conceding: “He will not be replaced by Tim Addington, as we erroneously reported.”

Wisely, he added: “We hereby acknowledge the mistake and herefore resolve to throw ourselves on the pyre of journalistic shame.”

Which brings us on to Corbett’s new nickname… Bryce “Pyre of Shame” Corbett, anyone?

Still, if it’s any consolation for Pyre of Shame, it’s not even Fairfax Media’s most embarrassing correction of the last week.

That one belongs to Good Weekend’s comprehensive withdrawal of every substantial claim in its Good Weekend lead article of May 7.

And Dr Mumbo suggests that should ‘Addo’ get the job after all, he makes Corbett his first hire to open the Bauer digital fact-checking unit.
