AFTRS Class of 2024 releases podcast

The AFTRS Class of 2024 has released a new podcast.

The announcement:

A genre-bending journey of dating through the decades, AFTRS students release A Date in Time: A time traveller’s guide to hooking up. After back-to-back award-winning podcasts in 2022 and 2023, AFTRS’ Class of 2024 has added another exceptional and uniquely entertaining title to the list.

Produced by students in AFTRS Graduate Diploma of Radio and Podcasting, the new ‘A Date in Time’ podcast is launched today.

Part-fact and part-fiction, A Date in Time melds real interviews with fictional characters to take a fresh look at dating rituals from the ‘70s to now. All six episodes are now available to listen.

Fed up with swiping left, Lexi is a Gen Z gal who time travels for a hobby. Determined to get a date, she looks to the past for inspiration. Understanding that ‘the past is like a foreign country – they do things differently there’, she invites some friends with lived experience of navigating a love life in each decade. Through the laughter of shared nostalgia, can Lexi discover the real tactics and tips of dating and finally escape the ‘situationships’ of 2024?

Radio and Podcasting student Grace Cooper voices Lexi, who takes the listener on a journey through time, exploring the quirks of dating and seeking advice across the decades. In each episode, two guests are interviewed about their real-life experience navigating love in a specific decade. Alongside her AI bestie, CLAIRE (Chrono Linking Artificial Intelligence Realtime Explorer), Lexi then travels back in time, and we hear how her ‘Date in Time’ plays out.

AFTRS student and producer of the podcast, Maggie Videan said: “What a cool concept to turn back the clock and check out how dating, love, lust and relationships have morphed over the years. We travel back 50 years in a unique collaboration of the Post-Grad Radio & Podcasting crew, complete from Boomers to Zoomers! It is unlike anything we have done in the course so far. Hold tight for the big reveal and hang on to your Nokias!”

Given just five weeks to produce the podcast, the AFTRS Radio and Podcasting students took on roles including hosting, producing, editing, composing, and even social media and promotion. Convenor, AFTRS Graduate Diploma Radio and Podcasting Natalie Pozdeev said: “Producing the podcast is a challenging yet thrilling learning experience, as AFTRS students take full ownership of the series, from concept to publication. This hands-on project ensures AFTRS Radio & Podcast graduates are workplace-ready from day one.”

Industry mentors guided students with one-on-one sessions in their areas of expertise. Mentors included Elissa Ratliff (former head of Podcasts at Mamamia), Jennifer Goggin (former Head of Factual and Drama Content, LISTNR Original Podcasts) and Stephanie Coombes (former Podcast Content Director at ARN), Dani Torresan (Backyard Magic) and former AFTRS student Harry Hughes (HoboHut Media Group).

Mentor Madeline Joannou (Mylk Media) said: “The creativity of the AFTRS Radio and Podcasting students is truly endless. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives bring a unique energy to storytelling. I’m excited for audiences to experience the innovative narratives they’ve crafted, showcasing the remarkable talent emerging in our industry”.

In the past two years, AFTRS students’ podcasts have both won awards: I’m at A Crossroad – 2023 (Best Factual Podcast for Radio Today) and Craze – 2022 (People’s Choice in the Indie Category for Radio Today’s Podcast of the Year).

The podcast concludes the year of learning that includes three on-air exercises, Show Radio in April, a regional broadcast 2NRS in June, and AFTRS FM in partnership with ARN with students broadcasting live with mentorship from guest air checkers, mentors and coaches from across the industry including Blair Woodcock and Jase Allen from SCA, Greg Byrnes from 9 Entertainment, Fiona Ellis Jones and Naomi Lynch from ARN, and Rob Mailer and Jodie Gunders from the ABC.
