Airwallex adds Uber’s Antonio Thewissen as marketing lead for ANZ

Airwallex has rounded out its local marketing capability with the appointment of Antonio Thewissen as director of marketing for Australia and New Zealand.

Thewissen joins the fintech from Uber, where he was Asia Pacific head of marketing for Uber for Business for the last 18 months.

His previous experience extends to senior roles in the Asia Pacific marketing team for Anaplan and Aveva, Schneider Electric and GE.

In his new role he will report directly to Airwallex’s global director of marketing, Jon Stona.

Thewissen said: “There’s a huge opportunity to tell Airwallex’s story and how we fit into making the lives of business owners and everyday Australians easier. I’m excited to be part of a business that is on such an incredible growth trajectory. It’s rare in Australia to be able to join a company at this stage that has such a clear proposition to make to new customers.

“There’s hundreds of billions of dollars made in payments and transactions each year in Australia and we’re here to help business owners grow and expand both domestically and abroad.”

Airwallex has also appointed Nick Creevey as the business’ associate director of corporate affairs for Australia and New Zealand.

Creevey most recently worked as a press secretary for the Australian Government, having worked for former Prime Minister Scott Morrison and then-education minister Simon Birmingham for seven years. He was previously part of the group public affairs team at the Commonwealth Bank, and a consultant for n2n communications.

In his new role Creevey will report to Airwallex senior VP and global head of corporate affairs, Susan Ho.

Creevey commented: “There’s some significant challenges Australia faces as the government works to adapt its systems to ensure more new payments services can compete with incumbents, and at Airwallex we want to help shape that.

“After all, more competition from newer providers like Airwallex means lower costs for the tens of thousands of Australian businesses and their millions of customers who use payment services almost everyday.

Airwallex’s director of strategy for Australia and New Zealand, Amelia Hamer, added:  “We’re further building out our team in Australia and New Zealand to support our growth plans in this region into 2023.

“Australia is an important market for Airwallex – it’s where we started and there’s significant opportunity to work with more customers and businesses on everything from their payments, treasury, spend and embedded finance.

“Australians interact with payments services almost everyday and everywhere. Whether you’re buying clothes from a company in another country, in a business selling them overseas, wishing to pay for Facebook advertising or other advertising platforms, or a firm managing staff expenses incurred in different countries, if you’re a modern business, you will be using Australian and global payments systems more and more.”
