Ansell condoms ‘Zero or nothing’ ad cleared by Ad Standards
An outdoor ad for ultra-thin Ansell condoms brand Zero that features a naked spray-painted couple has been cleared by the Ad Standards Bureau.
Complaints from the public called the ad “soft pornography”, said the ad sexualised women and was not suitable for display in public.
Some criticised the ad for its copy, saying that the line ‘Zero or nothing’ implied that people should use Zero condoms or no contraception at all.
The ASB deemed that although the couple’s clothing has been painted on, no genitals are visible, and many people would not notice that their clothing is painted on.
The board also considered that the overall tone of the ad is in the context of a safe sex strategy and not sexualised without good reason.
Only a minority of the board reckoned that the slogan ‘Zero or nothing’ could be taken to mean use Zero condoms or don’t use contraception.
“The majority of the board considered that this was an unlikely interpretation and that the most likely, and intended, message is that you should wear a Zero condom or not have sex at all,” read a statement from the ASB.
At least they weren’t in a hot tub with a battery operated device.
