Ant Man creeps to the top of the charts as Ruben Guthrie opens strongly on limited release

Marvel’s latest offering Ant Man managed takings of $5.346m on its opening weekend to leapfrog Minions, Inside Out and Magic Mike XXL to the top of the box office.

The adventures of Paul Rudd’s shrinking superhero were shown on 577 screens while the end of the school holidays bit hard on the animated capers, with Minions taking $1.447m to take its total takings to $30.595m, and last week’s number one Inside Out dropping to $1.582m, with total takings of $28m.

Aussie film Ruben Guthrie, about an alcoholic adman looking to reform, managed $119,601 in a 33 screen limited release on the weekend, with total takings so far of $215,299.

Magic Mike XXL was in second spot with $2.260m, taking the Channing Tatum vehicle to $8.912m across its first two weekends.

New release Paper Towns, a movie about two friends who go on a road trip to find the missing girl next door, was third with $1.889m across 239 screens.

Jurassic World broke the $50m barrier at the box office with $1.087m on 282 screens, while the other reboot in the charts, Terminator: Genysis took $1.084m on 353 screens.
