The announcement:

Sydney, Australia, Monday 17th May, 2010 – Yahoo!7 today announced the appointment of Vanessa Brown to the newly created role of Director of Marketplaces.

Reporting to CEO Rohan Lund, Vanessa will lead the Yahoo! Search Marketing business and will be responsible for Total Travel, which Yahoo!7 acquired in September 2009. Vanessa will also be charged with expanding the Yahoo!7 business into new commercial opportunities in vertical areas.

Vanessa has 17 years experience both in the television and online media in Australia and Europe. Prior to joining Yahoo!7 Vanessa was the General Manager for AOL, Australia and New Zealand where she oversaw the launch of the portals in ANZ and managed all aspects of the local business.

“We’re pleased to have Vanessa on board to lead the Yahoo! Search Marketing business, Total Travel and further develop our strategy around vertical marketplaces. We hired someone of Vanessa’s caliber so we can get serious about the space,” said Rohan Lund, Yahoo!7 CEO.

According to Vanessa Brown the blurring of the online search, classifieds and direct response space over the past year opens up a great opportunity for Australian advertisers.

“Advertisers have become more comfortable with online as a way to drive leads, and as online user behavior has become more sophisticated, we see the search market fragmenting where ‘vertical search’ experiences become more important,” she said.

“Combine this with Yahoo!7’s understanding of the direct response and classified markets we see a huge opportunity to create vertical marketplaces that harness the commercial intent of users and help advertisers connect to people at the point when they are ready to purchase. Yahoo!7 has started this journey in the travel sector and we are actively looking at how best to open up new marketplaces.”

Based in the Sydney office, Vanessa commenced with Yahoo!7 in April 2010.
