The Ashes wins 1.64m for Nine as Seven takes second place

Channel Nine dominated summer television viewing again on Monday with The Ashes by far the highest rating free-to-air program, winning 1.642m viewers for the evening session and 1.13m for the afternoon, preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam show.

Seven’s lineup was second throughout the timeslots as Australia edged closer to regaining the urn for the first time in four years, despite England’s rearguard action.

Today Tonight was Seven’s strongest performer with 951,000 viewers at 6.30pm, followed by Animal Airport, Dog Patrol, Chicago Fire and Better Homes and Gardens.

Nine continued to dominate the 9pm timeslot after the Ashes, according to the preliminary overnight ratings, as 2 Broke Girls averaged 592,000 at 9pm but fell to 501,000 at 9.30pm, as the cricket broadcast finished just after 9pm.

Chicago Fire was second in the 8.30pm and 9pm timeslot, followed by Rick Stein’s India, which averaged 509,000 for ABC1. Ten’s Homeland, the final episode of the third series, was fourth in the timeslot with 432,000 metro viewers.

Nine also dominated the 25-54 ad demographic with session three of the third test of the Ashes series the most watched among the age group, followed by Nine News and The Ashes second session.

Channel Ten’s most watched shows were two repeats of Modern Family, which averaged 557,000 and 536,000, ranking third in their timeslot.

Nine’s audience share dropped slightly on Sunday night when it reached 30 per cent, to 29.1 per cent last night, while Seven’s rose to  18.9 per cent. Ten had the third largest audience share with 10.6 per cent.
