Second Ashes Test scores Gem’s largest audience yet

The first day of the second Ashes test broke another record for Nine’s HD channel Gem drawing in the largest ever audience for the channel with  807,000 metro viewers.

Although Gem’s broadcast of the Ashes from 7.30pm was one of the top ten programs of the night, the channel’s 12.9 per cent share of the audience slightly lower than the day of the July 11 game which had 665,000 metro viewers and gained the channel a 15 per cent  audience share. Gem also had 303,000 metro viewers for the pre-game show, while the second session had 391,000, compared with 467,000 for the July 11 game.

Gem beat Ten and ABC1 on share for the night.

Fox Sports 2’s live cricket coverage scored a further 433,000 viewers for the first sessions and 199,000 for the second according to the national STV ratings.

Nine won the night with 22 per cent of the audience. Nine News was the top program of the night with 1.317m viewers, while The Block had 1.276m according to the overnight OzTAM ratings.

Ten’s MasterChef at 7.30pm had one of its smallest audiences to date with 461,000 viewers, although it was the MasterClass cooking instruction episode that generally has smaller numbers than the competition programs.

Seven’s screening of Pirates of the Caribbean sequel On Stranger Tides brought in 564,000 metro viewers, while Seven News had an audience of 1.192m, Today Tonight 1.01m and Home and Away 969,000 across the five city metro.

In the morning battle, Nine’s Today had 389,000 viewers and 363,000 tuned into Seven’s Sunrise.
