Australia tops global Facebook use, reveals Digital in 2017 report

Australians have the highest number of active Facebook users globally, according to research revealed in the ‘Digital in 2017’ report, compiled by social media companies Hootsuite and We Are Social.hootesuite-we-are-social-digital-australia-useThe report claims the global average for daily active Facebook use is 55%; however, Australia surpasses the global average at 75%, just ahead of Italy on 74% and Poland with 73%.

Australia has 16 million active social media users as at January 2017, with 14 million active mobile social users – an increase of 14% in 12 months.

On a global scale, social media increased by 21% over the past year with a reach of 2.8 billion global users. Mobile social media has also increased, year-on-year, with 91% of global users accessing social sites from their mobile phones.

Hootsuite senior director of growth and marketing, APAC, Roger Graham, said: “One of the greatest opportunities of a digitally-connected world is the ability to have immediate conversations, wherever and whenever customers want.

“Social media not only enables organisations to amplify its brand, but also build trust, credibility and human relationships at scale. It is now as much the responsibility of the top executive as the social media manager”.

Simon Kemp, global consultant at We Are Social, said: “Half of the world’s population is now online, which is a testament to the speed with which digital connectivity is helping to improve people’s lives. The increase in internet users in developing economies is particularly encouraging”.
