Australia leads the world in Reddit usage
Australia leads the world in Reddit usage, with a third of internet users over 16 accessing the platform at least once in the past month.
This is according to Meltwater’s new July Global Statshot Report, which offers up detailed statistics for internet use, social media use, and mobile use.
The 33% of Australians over 16 using Reddit far exceeds the global average of 11.9%. Australia leads the world in this regard, closely followed by Ireland where 32.4% of the population used the platform in the past month, New Zealand (32.2%), the US (32.2%), and Canada (32.1%).
Earlier this year, Reddit’s chief operating officer Jen Wong told Mumbrella that its user base is mature in the Australian market.
“It’s a top-five market for us, and it’s a high-growth user market,” she said.
This bears out when looking at Reddit use from other major markets such as Japan, China, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany — all of which fall under 10%. Japan has the second smallest use base of all active markets, with just 1.2%, ahead of just Ghana.
Surprisingly, given our relatively small population, Australia is also a leading market when it comes to potential advertising reach on the platform.
Reddit advertising can potentially reach 94% of the Australian population aged 13 and up, some 21.5 million people. Percentage wise, Australia’s ad reach is ranked fourth in the world, behind Canada, the US, and Singapore. This fell by 6.3% in the June quarter, compared to the prior quarter. No year-on-year data was made available, so this decrease may be seasonal.
Population-wise, Australia ranks sixth for eligible reach, behind the US, UK, Canada, India, and Germany.
Reddit currently draws 17 million monthly users in Australia, according to data from Ipsos.
As Wong told Mumbrella in April: “It’s a big audience. We’ve become very mainstream. I think Australia is a really significant opportunity for us.”
The study also showed that Australia ranked among the top ten countries for frequency in TV streaming viewership, and has the third-highest percentage of its population paying for TV streaming services — with 48.9% shelling out to watch content.
Australia is also second only to Norway when it comes to paying for music streaming services, with 40.2% paying to access music.

Such reliable data!
What an extraordinary accomplishment for Reddit to achieve that they reach 111% of the population People 13+ in Canada.
Anyone, and I mean ANYONE in media, must understand that is not possible and that probably the maths used to derive that error is invalid.

No wonder a lot of Australians are detached from reality.
