Australia wins eight Outdoor Lions, agencies from São Paulo – where outdoor ads are banned – win 34

Share a Coke: first Gold Lion for outdoor

After an awful showing in the Outdoor Lions at Cannes last year, Australia has returned to form winning eight awards in the category.

Ogilvy Sydney’s Share a Coke campaign claimed its first gold at Cannes, and picked up another bronze, adding to its tally in Direct, Promo and PR.

The campaign used an interactive billboard to project peoples’ names on to Sydney’s Coke billboard in King’s Cross, and passers-by were invited to text a friend’s name to see it up in lights.

A second Australian Outdoor gold went to Clemenger BBDO Sydney, for its Aus to USA street furniture execution for Virgin Australia, while Colenso BBDO Auckland won gold for New Zealand for Twigs for DB Breweries.

Patts Melbourne scooped a trio of bronzes for three different executions of a campaign for AFL.

A slew of awards went to agencies based in the Brazilian city of Sao Paolo, where outdoor advertising is banned.

Outdoor juror Wilson Mateos, creative director of DDB Brazil, told Mumbrella: “The law banning billboards is just for the city of São Paulo, not the state of São Paulo. So, there are cities close to São Paulo running billboards as normal.”

“And what is banned in São Paulo is just one part of what we consider outdoor advertising in Cannes’ terms – billboards. But we can still run posters inside universities, bookshops, shopping malls and offices, as well as live activity in other public spaces.”
