Australian Idol is not in danger

Stan Walker, winner of the 7th edition of Australian Idol

A spokesman for FremantleMedia has dismissed rumours that the move of Australian Idol’s executive producers Greg Beness and Suzanne Mitchell to Australia’s Got Talent compromises the future of the show.

“I wouldn’t read too much into it,” he told Encore.

Benness and Mitchell will work on Australia’s Got Talent, which will air on Seven later in the year.

The Daily Telegraph speculated today that “the chances of Idol coming back in 2010 just got a whole slimmer’ with this move, because Beness “was instrumental in [Idol‘s] success”.

FremantleMedia said that the production company is still in discussions with Ten regarding the Idol franchise.

“No firm news at this point.

“Greg and Suzanne are both on Australia’s Got Talent as consulting producers for the audition tour, it’s what they do so well,” the spokesman added.

Although Idol‘s ratings have fluctuated since its launch in 2003, Encore understands that it is unlikely that Ten would cancel the show without at least having a final season and a proper farawell for the format.
