Australian Press Council appoints first female Chairs to Panels

The Australian Press Council (APC) has appointed two new Chairs to its Adjudication Panels with hopes to increase gender diversity and extend expertise in the organisation ranks.

Press Council Members Julie Kinross, barrister at the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General, and Jennifer Elliott, former managing director and regional head of Moody’s Asia Pacific, are the first women to be appointed to the position of Chair.

APC new appointments

Professor Weisbrot said of the appointments: “In making these appointments, we were conscious of the need for greater gender and geographical diversity, as well as to recognise and develop the capabilities of our public members.”

“As women comprise a significant part of the news readership, it makes sense for the composition of the Adjudication Panels to reflect that readership”, said Kinross.

Elliott added: “Given the rapid change in the media landscape today, it’s important that the Council continues to ensure its Adjudication Panels are well placed to respond by broadening expertise.”

The panels, which are usually headed by the Council’s Chair, Professor David Weisbrot, or Council Vice-Chairs, Hon John Doyle AC and Julian Gardner AM, will now be headed by Kinross and Elliott as well.
