Australian reveals Android based tablet app

The Australian has revealed that it has reworked its iPad tablet app for Google’s Android operating system, and signed a deal with Samsung for buyers of its Galaxy device to get a two month free subscription .  

The announcement:

The Australian’s deputy chief executive, Nick Leeder, today announced a major partnership with Samsung Australia.

Consumers who purchase Samsung‟s new GALAXY Tab Android-based tablet, on sale week commencing November 8, will be given a free two-month introductory trial to The Australian’s news application~.

The app, which has been specifically designed for the Samsung GALAXY Tab, features The Australian’s world class news and analysis, vibrant photography, page-by-page and sectional navigation and fully integrated advertising.

Updated regularly through the day, the app allows readers to access Australia‟s premier journalism wherever and whenever they want, on what Engadget calls „the gold standard for Android tablets.‟*

Content on the app includes –

News, including The Nation and Higher Education Opinion, Editorial and Letters National Affairs, including Climate, Defence and State Politics World News, including Travel and Health & Science Features, including The Arts Business, including Media, World Business News, Markets, Economics, Aviation, Legal Affairs and Property, as well as content from The Wall Street Journal Australian IT, including IT Business, Exectech, Government and Telecommunications Sport, including Football, Cricket, Rugby, AFL and League

Additional content and functionality, including video and photo galleries, will be added to the app in the coming weeks.

Mr Leeder said that the partnership will see The Australian significantly expand the reach of its journalism and affirm its position as a leader in digital innovation.

“Within a few years tablet devices such as the Samsung GALAXY Tab are going to play a central role in millions of Australian lives, and it is already clear there is a huge appetite for reading news on them.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Samsung to give owners of the GALAXY Tab the chance to sample The Australian’s world-class journalism through Australia‟s only dedicated newspaper Android app.

“We are confident that the launch of the Samsung GALAXY Tab, and this partnership, will result in a new generation of subscribers to The Australian.”

On completion of the two month trial, Samsung GALAXY Tab owners will be able to subscribe to The Australian app for just $8.99 per month or $36.99 for a six-month subscription.
