Australian thriller The Nightingale takes nearly $100k in first weekend

Controversial Australian thriller The Nightingale has taken $97,612 for its first weekend at the box office, landing it in 17th place. The film, which is the second from The Babadook director Jennifer Kent, showed across just 33 screens.

Adam Goodes documentary The Australian Dream, which landed last week on 101 screens to take $164,972, managed a further $120,806 across 105 screens this weekend, putting it just above The Nightingale on in 14th position.

It was Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood that held the top spot across the weekend, bringing in a further $2.649m to a running total of $16.135m in the Australian box office. Gerard Butler-led action film Angel Has Fallen took the second spot for its second week, bringing in $1.430m to build its running total to $3.796m.

Disney’s The Lion King, and Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw both managed to stay in the top five, taking $1.112m and $778,184 respectively. The Lion King pushed past $60m in the Australian box office last week after eight weeks of release.

Chinese animated fantasy film Ne Zha took the fifth spot with $509,613 for its second week out, followed by action/ thriller Saaho which appeared twice on the list, once in Tamil/ Telugu/ Malayalam and once in English. The first brought in $419,781 and the second $321,281.

The Kitchen, which is based on a comic book series and stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elisabeth Moss took $380,217 across its first weekend, showing over 299 screens, compared to 48 for Saaho and 41 for Ne Zha.

Australian drama Palm Beach and A Dog’s Journey rounded out the top 10 with $304,619 and $295,178 respectively.
