Australia’s Ashes collapse beats The Bachelor to be most watched non-news show of the night

Courier MailThe slaughter of the Australian cricket team on day one of the fourth Ashes test in Nottingham drew 848,000 viewers on Nine’s digital channel Gem last night.

Gem was the second highest rating channel of the night as Australians tuned in to watch their side capitulate in the first innings from 8pm, a performance that has dominated headlines nationally this morning.

Gem had a 14.7 per cent share – higher than Seven’s main channel which had 14.6 per cent and Ten which had 12.8 per cent, beating The Bachelor which had 794,000 to be the most-watched non-news show of the night.

Despite the strong performance of The Ashes overall Ten’s reality dating show The Bachelor won across all the demographics, 16-39, 18-49, 25-54.

The result is the second highest ever audience share for Nine’s HD digital channel coming just below the record set in the 2013 series of 858,000.

Nine’s main channel had the highest share of the night with 17.4 per cent.

Seven’s Restaurant Revolution had 427,000 viewers and did not in the top 20 shows of the night at 7.30pm, according to OzTam’s overnight metro ratings.

The result for Restaurant is marginally up on last week where it drew 415,000 but comes after Seven cancelled its Monday-Wednesday episodes of the program which performed badly against rival The Hotplate, forcing the network to move it and cut the number of episodes.

Seven also launched legal action against rival cooking franchise, claiming copyright infringement against My Kitchen Rules, with the Federal Court late yesterday declining to issue an interlocutory injunction ahead of a full trial.
