Bauer ‘set to rationalise mastheads’ with boss Stanton ‘in the firing line’
Australia’s largest magazine publisher Bauer Media is set to close more titles, the Australian Financial Review predicts today.
The former ACP was bought by the German publisher last year. According to the AFR “a major rationalisation of mastheads is set to be announced in coming days”.
The prediction came in the Rear Window column which was correct in its previous two predictions of the closure by Bauer of both Madison and Grazia.
The column also suggests that CEO Matt Stanton is “in the firing line”.
10.30 am update: A spokesman for Bauer vigorously rejected any suggestion that Stanton’s role was in question. She said: “It’s rubbish. Certainly Matt’s job does not have any question on it. He’s doing an outstanding job.”
To be fair there’s a lot of old loss-making dross over there that should have closed long back – those tatty men’s titles for starters (Picture, People and Zoo). Motor doesn’t sell anything either. I’ve always wondered why Bauer would bother with mags like Rolling Stone and Empire too. Don’t sell any or get any advertisers… They’d be better at a niche publisher who could give them the tenderness they require…
