Beacon of light shines on typo
What is it with spelling mistakes in end credits? You know, the bit of the ad containing information which consumers need to go out and buy the product. Well, creative agency The Other Dimension has seized on a clanger in an ad for Beacon Lighting, in which the brand name has been butchered by a typo in the company web address.
But rather than ringing the company to point this out to them, the agency has gone a step further by registering the skewwhiff URL and inviting Beacon Lighting to contact them to hand it back to them.
“I wonder how long it will take for the phone to ring?,” wondered Andrew Wilson, a partner at The Other Dimension. “You’ll also note that we aren’t trying to squat on the address (not that we’d expect anyone to actually visit there…) as we’re offering it to them for nothing when they get in touch.”
Must have already killed it because your link doesn’t work…

Anybody else see that the link to theotherdimension at the bottom of the page (http://www.beaconlgihtong.com.au/) does not work either… top job.

Hilarious! Could do with a bit of spell checking on your Mumbrella site too. Your eDM revealed a fair few typos in the article intros.

@Nicework: Yes, it seems they forgot the http in the html. LOLs all around.

As Bryce Courtenay was quoted as saying in an address at the Caxtons one year…”art directors are people who f**k up words.”.

@Nicework and Warlach,
Yeah, my bad there. The logo itself was hyperlinked but the addition of the actual address was an afterthought – and is now corrected. How’s that for karma?? (But I should at least get points for owning up and not astroturfing the comments…)
@analonymous, I’m willing to forgive Mumbrella the odd typo because they’re fast. An ad like the above, on the other hand, goes past quite a few eyes and should be easier to spot.

@OtherAndrew: Yeah, I figured as much – and yes, you win 10 Internets.

@Andrew – Good marks on initiative.
But… let’s talk web development for a minute. Forget the typo above, that’s peanuts compared to the fact that your website is built in tables, yet you profess to providing SEO services.
And you can’t blame it on the cobbler’s children with no shoes scenario when your the client work I viewed (linked from your site) is exactly the same.

@BG,
Excuse my late reply – we actually moved offices today so have been rather busy. I wanted to take the time to give you a proper response.
Firstly, cheers for the good marks on initiative.
Secondly, our site needs a massive overhaul (read: we’re working on a new one). The fact that it’s built in tables is the least of our worries there. As you predicted, I *am* actually going to pull the ‘cobblers children’ line there. We’ve had this one for four plus years which is precisely because we’ve been focused on client work.
But when we do rebuild it, how much of the decision-making will be based around SEO considerations? Well, to be frank, not much. Is that heresy in the 21st century? I don’t think so – it’s simply an understanding that a) SEO for keywords such as ‘creative agency Sydney’ or similar is going to be a *fairly* crowded space so it’s not worth the investment; especially considering b) we’re generally not after the sort of clients that think ‘I need a creative agency, I wonder who I can find using Google’.
The case is much the same with several of our clients in their respective industries, and their sites reflect that.
For those that do require focused SEO services, we actually don’t offer this in-house. We do, however, list SEO in our services as we have partners we can outsource this work to (but we manage the whole process for our clients obviously). In spite of your conclusion, we actually do have a sufficient working knowledge of SEO to build sites appropriately – but as you would also know, looking after the whole SEO process is such a specialised field these days that you’re better off leaving it to someone who lives and breathes it. If that’s you (and I’m guessing so based on your comments) perhaps you’d like to come in for a chat and see our new office?
