Best Picture Oscar winner Spotlight stays in top 10 but Deadpool dominates box office
Rebel Wilson’s latest film, How to be Single, managed to take $2.026m on its second weekend but could not match the box office pulling power of superhero movie Deadpool.
Freshly-minted Best Picture winner at the Oscars, Spotlight, maintained a spot in the top 10, taking $233,963 on 159 screens to take its total takings to $3.726m so far in Australia.
A quiet week for new releases meant The Marvel Comics’ adaptation Deadpool managed $4.421m on 418 screens to move its total takings past $33.5m locally, while Wilson’s film has now taken $6.19m.
The highest ranking new picture was Gods of Egypt which failed to break the million dollar mark taking $901,326 on 198 screens. The fantasy epic, which was filmed in Australia, has bombed globally.
The Michael Bay directed 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, which tells the story of staff at the American embassy trying to hold off waves of offensives on the Lybian compound, managed $608,514 on its debut.
It was ahead of Zoolander 2 which has failed to impress so far, managing $534,697 taking its total to $6.498m. Chinese sci-fi film The Mermaid took $262,321 on just 19 screens.
